Gamma 256

Gamma 256

Gamma 256 took place on November 28th here in Montreal at the Société des arts techonoligues (SAT). Unfortunately I wasn’t able to stay for long since I had other commitments to attend to, but I enjoyed my time spent there very much.

Hosted by the Kokoromi Collective, Gamma 256 is an artistic event to promote creativity in games and games as an art form. The main rule was to make a game with the maximum resolution of 256×256 pixels. 8 games were on display and available to play on big screens with kick ass music pumping through from the Djs.

It was interesting to see the different gameplay and visual approach of each game , although one game “Celu” seemed to be running on more than 256×256px. Nevertheless, there was a lot of variety and the constraint of size seemed to work well to encourage creativity and experimentation. The one I liked the most was StBits by Mark Johns, in which you took control of a dot in a psychedelic maze-like environment, where crossing any side of the screen would lead you to a new frame displaying different colors, layout and hazards.

I didn’t stay long enough to hear all the Djs but the first one I heard was really amazing. Chiptune music with sweet rhythms and sounds, her name was Bubblyfish and I think she was using a pair of Game Boys.

I had a good time even though I would had like to stay longer, I can’t wait for the next Kokoromi project.
