PSP firmware is now v3.80, the main feature of this update is the addition of two internet radio players for the PSP. Player I works with SHOUTcast and Player II with Icecast2, the files downloaded to your PSP for each player are around 12kb and you will of course need to have access to a wireless connection in order to listen to the stations.
After updating the firmware, navigate to the Network tab in the XMB where you should be able to see the new “Internet Radio” option. Select “About Internet Radio” and just follow the instructions to download the players. Once that’s done, Player I and Player II will be available in the same location.
Both radios work the same way but they each offer different stations, though SHOUTcast seems to have a bigger selection.
I have to admit I don’t use my PSP very often, but it’s slowly winning me over by adding features like this. Internet radio is a great way to discover new music and there’s so much variety everyone is sure to find something they like. It takes almost no space at all on the Memory Sticks so make sure to download them. You’ll have access to tones of music anywhere you can get a wireless connection.
Quick Tips
- Press down on the d-pad to see all the genres and the options.
- The four buttons at the bottom turn on and off different sound effects that make the player sound like an analog radio, I suggest to at least turn off the last one to remove the static sound.
- The four circles labeled C, B and P display the quality and consistency of the stream.
- Click on the name of the station to open a new browser tab to their website.
- Click the small lit windows to change stations or click the “other stations” arrows.
- Sometimes a station will have more than one stream for different bit rates, see the tip above.
- Press on START to mute the player and press it again to resume.

I love the variety that this has to offer. Now buying the wifi router for my workplace is even more sweeter.
why doesn’t my radio have sound? i can’t even see the decscriptions next to the ‘genre’ buttons. and when click on it, it says scanning, but nothing happens, how do i fix this?
To Skye: The same thing was happening for me, but it seems to resolved itself after a few tries. Try turning the psp off all the way and back on. No guarantees, but just keep trying and it might end up working.
Maybe you just had a weak signal from the internet connection your PSP was accessing. It can also be that you pressed on START button by mistake which mutes the radio, if so, just press it again to resume.
to-skype u have to hit “yes” when it says to run plug in on page
it would be nice if you could specify what station you want to listen to, instead of scanning thru every station… it’s kinda annoying… still better than nothing tho
This is awesome!!!!!!!!!! Another win for a clearly superior device!!
all the music i want when i want it… ahmen
question… i just purchased the PSP and i’ve downloaded the player as required but it saves it to a location called “common”. When i go back to the home on the PSP console its not under the network as it says it should be. I’m nervous about changing the save location in case it kills my PSP or something… any suggestions? thanks!
Do you have a memory stick in your PSP? or are you using the internal memory?
Yes. I have the memory card in there and i still can’t find the download/save anywhere.
to matthew: i think that you just have to organize your memory card on your computer, manually, iorder to organize videos and songs and things, but then again, your memory card may have a problem… check to see if the psp reads that the memory card is in… if not then thats a problem
i also think that the common? that you were mentioning may have been the internal memory like the prime spoke of. aain, to fix this you must organize, and make new ffolders as intructed in the manual.
umm,i have limited internet download of 1.5 gigs. does anybody know how many MB each song while streaming would take?
I love music
I have the same problem as Matthew- Got the PSP for Valentine’s Day-Have downloaded the Internet Radio as directed and it is saved to a file named Common. When I go to the PSP console there is no Internet Radio Icon under the Network tab as the instructions said there would be.
Have the reverse problem on RSS. Saved some RSS channels from the BBC news site. Have set the timer and everything. When I tab the BBC RSS icon what I get is a message: There is no Data
Using the Psp right out of the box with a 512mb Sony memory card from my digital camera. any suggestions ?
Update to Rick’s Question : I didn’t update any firmware.Should I do this before trying to install the Radio Player ? Guess the RSS channel problem is a separate issue
thanks
You should update your firmware to 3.80 or higher. Also make sure you download the update from within the PSP wireless connection or from the sony website of your region.
Thanks. I will give this a try. one further question on this:.Is the update saved to the memory card ? If so , I will have to wait until I get the 2gb card I intend to use for the psp. ( I’m using my camera card on a temporary basis until I get the new card.)
yeah, when you download the update it goes on your memory stick first, then you select the file from within the psp
For those who have firmware 3.80+ and still have problems, go to your PSP system settings, and format your memory stick. Doing this, your PSP will create the needed files itself instead of you doing it manualy. THE COMMON FILE CANNOT BE VEIWED USING A PSP. So try not saving anything on here unless you 100% know what your doing.
made my PSP a much more sweeter device :-) I’ll be getting an FM transmitter (much like the ones for IPOD’s) so I can hook this baby up with my home audio/theater system - heck this have better selections than what radio stations in Manila has :-)
how can i download the songs?
rick- you have to format the memory card under settings
the radio thing sucks for me, i think its buffering, the music will for 2 seconds, pause for 10, then repeat
can this break my psp or brick it by downloading it?
It’s totally legit and official so you don’t have to worry about breaking your PSP. Just enjoy
Does it have cuss word stations?
i own a psp v3.80,can i just download the skype or should i upgrade my psp to v3.90?thanks a lot!
You should always download the latest version for you PSP. All the features and functions roll over in each update, you can still download Skype if you have 3.90.
ok.thanks!
when i go select my genre it will connect to a radio station but the music will play for about 4 seconds and after that it will stop for about 3 seconds and do the same thing over and over again.
That’s because your Wireless Connections isn’t fast or strong enough.
Can someone help me?
I want to add my three radio stations onto the PSP. I use Shoutcast and have them on Nokia, Virtual radio and others. Is there somewhere I can go to register like the others.

Strange
i just updated my psp to the newest software and tried to download the internet radio but when i click on it from the psp home, after it connects to the wireless internet, it says a dns error has occured (8040411). help me if u can thank u
is there any way to find a certain radio station, or is it all random?
can anybody with a dns error(80401411) when i try to start up the internet radio
to dude: timing out means that the signal of your wireless connection is probably too weak
